Can council reposses your mortgage free home if you can’t afford to pay council tax?

hi I’d just like to know can the council or goverment take your house of you if u can’t afford to pay council tax? If Its mortgage free? I no there is difference between “can’t pay” and “won’t pay”

What if someone can’t pay? No income or money savings assets etc?

In both incidents what happens ? And can they put a claim in for your house while alive or dead etc?

So can they take your home cos u can’t pay?

Well do they provide help in paying it? I dnt claim any money yet but I will do soon will they give me benefits to pay council tax bill?
Obviously if I’m getting money from the state i will pay my bil cos I’m getting a income then,

Why hello Mo, quite a nasty situation you have got yourself into – can’t pay, won’t pay – alive or dead etc.

Let’s take this one step at a time. You have NOT mentioned how much your overdue council tax bill is and if you are in arrears. As you are aware, there is a big difference between not being able to pay £200 monthly in Council tax and also having a £3,000 arrears bill on top of that.

If you only owe the council a small amount, they are not going to waste their time going after your house (which is mortgage free).

If as you say you have no income, no savings, no assets etc. then you have to contact your local council to find if you are eligible for council tax relief. The next step would be for you to sign on for Social Security (I am assuming that you don’t qualify for unemployment benefit).

Then once they have made you fill in masses of forms and made sure you can’t afford anything, they will give you social security, relief against your council tax and even some help towards other expenses.

Don’t feel bad about claiming social security, it is your right as you are a UK tax payer and its our crooked government who has created this unemployment situation in this country and they should be made to pay for your misfortunes. when you are unemployed.
