Investing In Both an IRA and a 401k

Are you woundering about investing into both IRAs and 401ks at the same time? There may be certain rules and regulations, but in general most people can invest into both of these plans.

So, what is a 401k? What a 401k is, is a retirment account that lets employees grow their money tax free. The money which is deposited into the plan is deposited before it can be taxed and it is free to grow interest without being slowed down by taxes.

Your employer will normally manage and operate this plan for you and they may even automatically deposit a set amount of your income into the plan if you wish.

What is an IRA? An IRA is pretty much the same thing except with a few major differences. First of all an IRA has to be set up by the individual and that individual is responsible for the plan. The major advantage of an IRA is that it may come with many other added investment options.

For example while most 401k plans invest in mutual funds and bonds IRAs may be allowed to invest into stocks and in some cases even real estate.

Most people can invest into both of these plans, but there are a few exceptions. If you have too high of an income you may not be allowed to invest into both.

Each of these plans are built to help you save money for retirement as a result both the 401k withdrawal rules as well as the IRA distribution rules will not allow an investor to pull money out of their account before age 59 ½ without getting hit with an early withdraw penalty.

Even so these plans can go a long way into helping employees save up for retirement and when combined together they can be a very powerful vehicle.
